Solón realizó esta exhibición en 1992 al recordarse 500 años del mal llamado descubrimiento de América. El artista dibujó y pintó esta serie sobre papel amate de corteza de árbol que utilizan los mayas desde tiempos inmemoriales.
Solón made this exhibition in 1992 to remember 500 years of the misnamed discovery of America. The artist drew and painted this series on amate paper made from tree bark that the Mayans have used since immemorial time.
Las formas y líneas del papel amate inspiraron el trazo del artista que a momentos añade pigmento y retira color del papel de corteza de árbol. Cada cuadro está acompañado de una frase que dialoga con la imagen y problematiza al espectador.
The shapes and lines of the amate paper inspired the artist’s stroke, which at times adds pigment and removes color from tree bark paper. Each painting is accompanied by a phrase that dialogues with the image and problematizes the viewer.
Esta muestra dio origen al video La Conquista Interminable que es una visión del pasado y el presente a partir de un dialogo entre la crónica de Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala y la obra de Solón.
This exhibition gave rise to the video The Endless Conquest which is a vision of the past and the present based on a dialogue between the chronicle of Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala and the work of Walter Solón Romero Gonzales.
En la inauguración de esta muestra Solón dijo: “Fue una utopía creer que la vida habría de tener un significado equivalente después de la llegada de los hombres. Sólo fue y es riqueza para unos, exterminio, esclavitud y miseria para otros, los sobrevivientes gozan del beneficio de la espera”.
At the opening of this exhibition Solón said: “It was a utopia to believe that life would have an equivalent meaning after the arrival of men. It was and is only wealth for some, extermination, slavery and misery for others, the survivors enjoy the benefit of waiting”.
