El Quijote y la Rosa

La serie «El Quijote y la Rosa» está formada por cientos de dibujos que Solón hizo para el video «El Valle de las Piedras. De utopias perdidas y rosas cautivas» estrenado en 1993.

The series «Don Quixote and the Rose» is made up of hundreds of drawings that Solón made for the video «The Valley of the Stones. Of lost utopias and captive roses» released in 1993.

La historia que inspira esta serie es la siguiente: El Quijote está preso y desilusionado cuando se entera que los «ángeles» (los militares y políticos reciclados de las dictaduras) pisotean a diario los valores que representa la rosa, mientras evocan a la rosa en sus discursos.

Para salir de su encierro, el Quijote debe recuperar la fe en sus ideales. Para ello busca el Valle de las Piedras que simboliza la memoria que yace en el inconsciente colectivo del pueblo. Al reencontrarse con la historia grabada en la piedra, la prisión del Quijote se derrumba y este sale al rescate de la rosa.

El Quijote llega a un poblado gobernado por los «ángeles» y los descubre pisoteando a escondidas la rosa. Los «ángeles» le aseguran que ellos son fieles a la rosa y en prueba le muestran una estatua construida en homenaje a la rosa. El Quijote se da cuenta del engaño y arremete contra el monumento de la rosa para que el pueblo se de cuenta que han cosificado su imagen para poder continuar pisoteando su esencia. Los «ángeles» sacan a los perros para reprimir al caballero de la triste figura, quién después de duro combate, es atacado a traición por un perro.

El Quijote está crucificado en la pared. Jose Carlos, el nieto de Solón que ha acompañado esta historia en la mesa de dibujo del artista, deposita una rosa a los pies de nuestro personaje. El Quijote levanta la mirada y al ver la rosa su espíritu nuevamente parte al encuentro de «El Valle de las Piedras».

Varios de los dibujos que se muestran en esta muestra no ingresaron en el video pero como se podrá apreciar forman parte del alma de esta historia entre el abuelo Solón y su nieto José Carlos de cuatro años.

The story that inspires this series is the following: Don Quixote is imprisoned and disillusioned when he learns that the «angels» (the military and politicians recycled from dictatorships) trample daily the values ​​that the rose represents, while evoking the rose in his speeches.

To get out of his confinement, Don Quixote must regain faith in his ideals. To achieve this, he looks for the Valley of the Stones that symbolizes the memory that lies in the collective unconscious of the people.Upon reuniting with history engraved in the stone, the prison of Don Quixote’s collapses and he goes to the rescue of the rose.

Don Quixote arrives at a town ruled by the «angels» and discovers them secretly trampling the rose. The «angels» assure him that they are faithful to the rose and in proof they show him a statue built in homage to the rose. Don Quixote realizes the deception and attacks the monument of the rose so that the people can see that they have transformed the image of the rose in to a statue in order to continue trampling its essence. The «angels» bring out the dogs to repress the knight of the sad figure, who after hard combat, is treacherously attacked by a dog.

Don Quixote is crucified on the wall. Jose Carlos, Solon’s grandson who has accompanied this story on the artist’s drawing table, places a rose at the feet of our character. Don Quixote looks up and when he sees the rose his spirit once again sets out to meet «El Valle de las Piedras».

Several of the drawings shown in this exhibition did not end up in the video, but as you can see, they are part of the soul of this story between the grandfather Solón and José Carlos his four-year-old grandson.
